Excavation permits are required for any excavation or trenching in streets/public right-of-way. Examples of where excavation permits are necessary are electrolier and pull box relocations, monitoring wells, soil borings, and pothole drilling in public right-of-ways. Additionally, excavation and shoring plans may be required for work adjacent to the public right-of-way. A "U" (Utility) permit is issued to utility companies. Private contractors should apply for an "E" (Excavation) permit. Apply for a permit online or apply in person at a Bureau of Engineering District Office.
